Meet the chefs

From the Cheesecake at Roastery to the Dimsums at Steam Table, from the cuts and grills at Meat Vault to the bites at W Lounge, each venue at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island has a bold culinary concept amplified with Talent that brings their passion to life with flavor combinations - presenting food and drinks that are greener, lighter, fresher, brighter.

    Born in Guatemala, Chef Juan Bernardo Ancheita Canel's passion for food came from his mother who was a Pastry Chef. It was her signature milk cakes that first triggered his interest in South American flavours.

    Chef Juan began his culinary career in 2003 at Mexico's Quinta Real Hotel. It was here that he met his mentor Hugo Hernandez. Under Hernandez's mentorship, Chef Juan honed his skills first as a Commis Chef before swiftly climbing the ranks in the kitchen. It was during this time that Chef Juan had the prestigious honour of cooking for Pope John Paul II in the Presidential House of Guatemala.

    Creamy, fruity or chocolaty? Everything is possible and our Pastry Chef Shaik at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island will blow your mind with his sweet creations. Mahamood Shaik started off his career at Marriott Hyderabad, India as an Industrial Trainee. Ever since then, his career skyrocketed having worked at The Ritz Carlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa and Hilton Dubai Jumeirah. Shaik received a number of nominations and won several awards as Chef of the month through his career. Prior to joining W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island to continue with his sugary wizarding, Shaik worked as an Assistant Pastry Chef at the Bvlgari Resort & Residences Dubai. Anything from winter wonderland to miniature chocolate UFC fighters or DIY gingerbread houses and delicious cookies or cakes, Pastry Chef Shaik is your to go to man for it all. Don't be surprised if you ever pass by Roastery and see any creative designs, ask for a nibble - they're all edible!

    Starting his culinary journey by studying Catering and Hotel Management in Tamil Nadu, India, Puna Garthi has with his humble and sweet style managed to grow from into a Chef de Partie at Kempinksi Hotel in Ajman to today to work as Jr. Sous Chef at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island. Chef Puna is the brain behind the pool snacks at WET Deck and nibbles at W Lounge. Our Jr. Sous Chef has an eye for knowing what people want to grab as a bite to nibble along with delicious thirst-quenchers. Puna is the to-go-to man when it comes to bar food and snacks, so if you're hanging out by WET Deck and craving for something divine try out his refreshing healthy salmon salad or go for something more savory like the club sandwich or burger, you will not regret it!

    Coming from Jordan and with years of experience of the Arabic cuisine, Chef Akram knows how to cook the best hummus of various kinds. Starting of as a trainee in Jordan, Akram quickly climbed up the career ladder working as a Commis Chef at Kempinski Hotel Ishtar - Dead Sea, moving to The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal as Chef de Partie and today he is a Sous Chef at Mezza Bar at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island. With the expertise within the Arabic cuisine, Chef Akram gave his input and ideas to develop the menu at Mezza Bar - from delicious beetroot or sweet potato hummus accompanied with freshly baked bread to roasted chicken with fresh herbs influenced by Arabic cuisine, just thinking about it makes my stomach howl. 

    Whenever you're popping by Garage, make sure you say hi to Chef Akram and maybe he will give you his best tips to make the ultimate hummus - who knows, you may be the lucky one!

    An ever smiling Chef Anne, is best known for her dimsums that come with a side of her sweet voice greeting you. Having worked in luxury hotels in China like Intercontinental Hangzhou to those in the Middle East like Shangri-la Doha and JW Marriott Marquis City Centre, Doha Chef Anne understands what her guest's taste preferences are and has the skill to maintain authenticity in her dimsums while tailoring them to tantalize their taste buds. Through her career she has even catered for largescale events and is a great team leader and coach for others around. While dining at Garage, be sure to wave out to Chef Anne and dive into the delicacies from Steam Table that she has to offer!

    Have you ever felt the urge to taste divine and exceptionally crafted South American food? Then head right over to Nikkei House and meet our renowned Peruvian Chef, Luis. Chef Luis will make your heart skip a beat with his deliciously crafted dishes with a hint of Japan and dash from Latin America. With over a decade of experience from Peru to Abu Dhabi, Chef Luis is always eager to take inspiration from various cuisines, but his heart will always belong to the Latin American kitchen. Nikkei House is inspired by Japanese and Latin American cuisine and this combination is a must try! Whenever you visit Garage, pop by Nikkei House and have a chat with him to know all about the wonders of Lima and how he combines the two kitchens to create this perfect fit. Most importantly, try out his Classic ceviche or sushi Tuna Tiradito - it is to die for!

    In every kitchen, there is one mastermind, one who is in charge of the fort, steering towards the right direction and keeping everyone in line. The man who is holding our fort is 6 feet 2, walks a fast pace and comes from Germany. Meet our Executive Chef, Tobias who with over 14 years of experience across countries, keeps the wheel turning at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island. This tall man has an eye for creativity, time management and surely efficiency - he wouldn't be German otherwise! Chef Tobias is always open to listen to ideas on what could be served at various concepts or at events - he listens with intent, reflects on it and mixes in his seasoning and flavours to come up with the delicious offerings at W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island that you can sip & savor on.

  • Chef Sergio Chef Sergio

    Coming from the land of Pizza and Pasta, there could be no one better to lead the team at Amici than Chef Sergio. With over a decade of experience, Chef Sergio has worked in a Michelin Star Restaurant in his early years building a strong foundation for his skills and went on to work in various countries from London to Singapore, Bali, Sweden and finally here in UAE. He has primarily worked in specialty Italian restaurants leaving aside Buddha Bar in London and worked at various positions from a Chef De Partie and Junior Sous Chef moving up to a Sous chef, Chef de Cuisine and was also the head consultant for the launch of a new concept restaurant in Sweden.

    When you walk through the doors of Amici, you can't miss the smile and vibe that Chef Sergio creates, interacting with you and making your experience go beyond food and flavors with his stories, his laughter and his passion shining through at every table, every dish and in every diners experience.
